Saturday July 14, 2007 in Christ-for-Campers-2007

Hi Folks,

Here we are post Broome and looking forward to the Mission in Derby.

First let us recap on the Broome Mission. 500 Sausages were cooked over the eight breakfasts with 47 dozen Eggs, 40 kg of Bacon, 50 loaves of Bread into toast and approx. 60 Litres of Orange Juice, five and a bit kg of Muesli, two caterers size bags of Cornflakes, caterers box of Wheatbix plus individual serves of jam, honey, butter washed down with Tea and Coffee.

We arose at 5.30am (this was a challenge as it is quite cold at night) to be ready to arrive at the parks at 6.30am. The team became so expert at setting up that we were ready by 7am which enabled the team to have a time of prayer and cereal. The cooking was usually finished by 8.45am with people hanging around until approximately 9.30am.
During this time they received an 8 mins gospel talk on what it means to have Christ in our lives. These talks were primarily given by one of our team a retired minister. Two talks were given by the assistant Minister at Broome Anglican and another by the Senior Minister.

An important part of the morning was moving around amongst people and talking with them. We will never know what impact the breakfasts and the talks had on people but we can be confident that all these people have been touched by the gospel whether they respond is up to them and God. People in their senior years are very comfortable and set in their ways, so it is a challenge for them to accept Christ as this will mean they need to change.

The mission finality was dinner at a private home built on a sand hill overlooking Cable Beach. Quite spectacular!

At this dinner we catered for 170 people selling 152 tickets plus 15 helpers which were made up by the team and people from church, we were very grateful for their help with cooking and serving the meal. One couple that helped greatly where from our caravan park and we had only met them at the first breakfast; another was a friend of a friend who happened to be in Broome on holidays. His wife had to return to Sydney to visit a sick parent and thus freed him up to help with the mission. Perhaps this was in God’s plan for these people to have this association with the team and their faith.

Dinner was a wonderful night with a good gospel message and full tummy’s for all.

We served Pumpkin soup – 40 Litres, Topside Spit – 40kg, 10kg peas, 10kg julienne carrots, 26kg gourmet potatoes washed down with lots of Gravy. This was then followed with dessert made up of Apricot Danish and the best Carrot cake ever; these were washed down with lots of custard. To accompany this yummy meal was 30 Litres of red wine – Hardy’s Cab Sav and 16 Litres of white – Chardonnay. It was a quite remarkable purchase for Judy as she doesn’t drink wine but on good advice from others chose a lovely red.
God’s blessings and the pace during the mission were such that the aftermath was a bit of a let down. Still there was a bit to do to complete the mission. The funniest part of this side of things was that we had money to bank and none of the banks in town would take our deposit as we only had a credit union account so off to the post office we went to bank the money there, alas our card had expired. It seemed like no one in Broome wanted our money. Fortunately we had another credit union account so that is where we stored our funds.

We left Broome after a late start as our car had a flat tyre and needed repairing. Setting up in Derby was hot work but we are settled now and have been to meet the local minister and his wife this morning who are from New Guinea and work with the local indigenous people. We will attend church with them in the morning and plan to serve coffee and pancakes for morning tea.

One of the couples from our team in Broome have come across to help with Derby the other couple have gone to Eighty Mile Beach to help with the mission their. A new couple has joined us and will help with the Derby Mission, they arrived today and we had a good time of fellowship this afternoon.

The posters are up advertising the two days we will cook breakfast and tomorrow we will deliver advertising cards to the 208 sites ready for the first breakfast on Monday. Not sure how many to cater for so we will buy enough food for 120 knowing that we can use any left over’s for the second breakfast on Thursday.

  1. Lovely to hear from you lot and to know you are doing much more then cooking eggs! The word of the Lord will ccomplish the purpose for which He wishes to use it. Jesus love and prayers – Paul
